This outcome reflects the complexity and sensitivity of the issues involved, and the deeply held views expressed across society and within Parliament.

The debate surrounding assisted dying has brought to the forefront a range of important and often challenging topics. These include how we approach death and dying, the role and provision of palliative care, and the experiences of grief and bereavement that follow loss. The breadth and depth of engagement in this discussion highlight just how significant these issues are for individuals, families, and communities.

Commenting on the outcome, our CEO Yvonne Tulloch said:

“The decision not to pass the Assisted Dying Bill in Scotland reflects the complexity and sensitivity of the issues involved. AtaLoss remains neutral on the legislation itself, while recognising the depth of feeling and diversity of perspectives that have shaped this debate.

Importantly, the public and parliamentary discussions have brought greater attention to issues that affect us all, including death, grief, bereavement, palliative care and importantly how we support people at the end of life.

As a charity dedicated to supporting those who are grieving, we believe it is essential that this wider conversation continues.

Regardless of the outcome, we must work together as a society to challenge death denial, improve understanding of bereavement, and ensure that individuals and families facing loss receive informed, appropriate and accessible support.”

At AtaLoss, our focus remains on those affected by bereavement. Whether legislation changes or remain unchanged, the need for accessible support for people experiencing loss is constant.

We encourage continued open and respectful dialogue on these issues, alongside sustained efforts to strengthen grief support and raising awareness of the impact of bereavement.

__

AtaLoss is a UK wide charity helping bereaved people find support and wellbeing by raising awareness about the impact of bereavement; directing to help through the signposting website ataloss.org; and training and equipping community support, including through The Bereavement Journey® programme.

AtaLoss has published findings from a 2025 pilot delivering The Bereavement Journey® in prisons, indicating that the programme can offer prisoners a safe and constructive way to process loss, potentially supporting relational stability, custodial progression and factors associated with desistance from crime.

The pilots were delivered across seven prisons in England and Scotland, in partnership with Prison Fellowship in England and chaplaincy teams in Scottish establishments.

Following the encouraging early results, a further ten prisons will trial the programme this summer, with hopes to expand The Bereavement Journey® across prison estates in England, Wales and Scotland from Autumn 2026.

Why Bereavement Support Matters in Prisons

Bereavement is a significant, yet often hidden challenge in prisons. Those who enter custody are disproportionately likely to have experienced high levels of parental loss and traumatic and multiple bereavements, with disrupted family networks and limited opportunity to grieve. Many are then bereaved while serving their sentence, where there are further barriers to healthy grieving from privacy being limited and separation from family and support networks. Without opportunities to work through grief constructively, loss can remain unresolved and contribute to emotional distress, instability and destructive behaviour.

As one Programme Leader observed:

“Prisoners have limited access to their natural circles of support that they may have outside of the prison. Inside prison, it is more difficult to find help or people to trust, even for talking and sharing.”

Chaplains are available to support prisoners on a one-to-one basis, but specialist bereavement counselling is not always readily available while demand for support continues to grow. The Bereavement Journey® addresses this gap by offering a group support programme in which prisoners can explore their bereavement alongside others, and begin to understand how it has, and is, impacting their lives.

What is The Bereavement Journey®?

The Bereavement Journey® is a 7 Session programme of films and discussion groups developed by AtaLoss where the final, 7th session offers an optional opportunity to explore spiritual questions that can arise when someone has died. Delivered by Chaplains and Christians for their communities, the programme has spread rapidly since packaged publication to over 575 locations, due to its popularity and effectiveness in supporting people through grief.

Pilot Participation Across Seven Prisons

Seven prisons across England and Scotland participated in the pilot.

59 participants registered to attend

43 participants (73%) completed all 6 main Sessions, with all choosing to attend the optional Session 7

Transfers and early release were the primary reasons for non-completion. Where participants were unable to complete the programme, facilitators sought to ensure that appropriate alternative support was available.

The pilot reached individuals bereaved before, as well as during prison, with varied losses including parents, siblings, children, and significant friends.

Encouraging Outcomes

Participant feedback and facilitator observations indicate meaningful impact.

Participants described profound personal shifts:

“After 50+ years I have processed the first close loss I ever had and have held onto that sadness for all those years.”

“Without the help of The Bereavement Journey® I would never have faced my grief at all.”

94% reported coping with grief significantly or moderately better.

Programme leaders highlighted the value of providing time, structure and a safe group environment in which participants could reflect on their grief and share their experiences. Facilitators observed increased willingness among participants to discuss difficult emotions and engage constructively with others. They noted that the programme worked best alongside other support provision, with effective communication between chaplaincy, prison staff and other services helping to support participants and sustain their engagement. Group delivery also enabled chaplaincy teams to meet growing demand, while one-to-one support remained important for prisoners with greater vulnerability or complex needs.

A Programme Supporting Stability and Progression

The pilot findings align with wider rehabilitative goals within the prison system including greater relational stability among participants.

At HMP Foston Hall, extended delivery of the programme over an 18-month period additionally showed:

Increased engagement with the prison regime

Progression to enhanced prisoner status

Participants taking on roles of responsibility, including peer mentoring roles

Several individuals released without returning to custody over a 2-year period .

A recurring pattern emerged in the life histories of participating women:

Criminal offending had often followed significant bereavement

Alcohol and drug misuse were frequently used to mask unresolved grief

Unhealthy or abusive relationships compounded vulnerability

Financial instability and caregiving pressures limited space to grieve

Subsequent losses reinforced cycles of addiction and offending behaviour.

While the research does not claim direct causation, these patterns suggest that addressing grief can play an important role in stabilising behaviour and supporting rehabilitation.

Voices from the Pilot

Revd Douglas Creighton, Facilitating Chaplain at HMP Edinburgh, and former Facilitating Chaplain at HMP Perth said:

“Grief is a powerful and often unspoken reality for many people in custody. The Bereavement Journey® offers prisoners the rare opportunity to talk honestly about loss in a safe environment. We have seen how that space for reflection helps people develop healthier ways of coping and relating to others. In some cases, I have observed reduced volatility among men who have completed the programme.”

Stephen Hawkins, Operations Manager at Prison Fellowship, said:

“Our volunteers see every day the complex personal histories that many people in prison carry with them. The Bereavement Journey® offers a constructive way for people to address unresolved grief and begin to move forward. It is encouraging to see how well this model can work within the prison environment.”

Next Steps for The Bereavement Journey® in Prisons

The findings provide encouraging early evidence for the role of The Bereavement Journey® in prisons. The material has been found to easily adapt to the prison context and it is intended that whilst trials continue, a bespoke prison Leaders’ Pack will be developed.

Yvonne Tulloch, CEO of AtaLoss, said:

“Grief is a hidden factor in many prisoners’ stories. We have long wanted to see The Bereavement Journey® in prisons and before we could address how that could be, Prison Fellowship and prison Chaplains approached us saying it is just what they needed. Desistance research highlights mechanisms that support movement away from offending, including emotional regulation, identity reconstruction, narrative reflection, future orientation and relationship repair. The Bereavement Journey® offers all of this and more. With the right funding we could expand its provision to prisons across the UK.”

Read the full report: The Bereavement Journey ® in Prisons

To explore opportunities, offer funding or learn more about delivering The Bereavement Journey® in prisons, please get in touch: office@ataloss.org.uk

__

AtaLoss is a UK wide charity helping bereaved people find support and wellbeing by raising awareness about the impact of bereavement; directing to help through the signposting website ataloss.org; and training and equipping community support, including through The Bereavement Journey® programme.

Yvonne Tulloch, CEO and Founder at AtaLoss or Roger Greene, Deputy CEO and former NHS Trust CEO are available by prior arrangement.

Media interviews can be arranged via WhatsApp message to Adam May on 07736 949 869 or press@ataloss.org

The COVID-19 Day of Reflection, 8th March, is a national moment to pause and remember those who died, to reflect on the experiences of those who grieved, and to acknowledge the lasting impact of the pandemic on our lives and communities. The day is organised by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and AtaLoss, as a member of its advisory committee, is pleased to be providing:

our essential signposting service to those who are currently grieving and for whom the activities and reminders will trigger their unprocessed grief, and

directing to The Bereavement Journey® courses across the UK for community support.

The pandemic exposed the profound consequences of disrupted grieving. Many people were unable to say goodbye to loved ones, to be present at the end of life, or to hold the funerals and gatherings that help families and communities process loss. For many, this has contributed to delayed, suppressed or complex grief.

The Day of Reflection acknowledges not only those who died, but also the millions who continue to live with the personal and collective impact of that time.

Roger Greene, Deputy CEO of AtaLoss, whose wife Vicky died of COVID-19 in April 2020, reflects:

“Vicky died in a lockdown dementia care home. I wasn’t able to see her during that period of time, and in fact I didn’t see her body until 10 days after her death. For her family and friends, it was two years before we could get together and truly celebrate her life.”

AtaLoss encourages anyone affected by bereavement to seek help if needed. Our award-winning services help anyone bereaved recently or long ago to receive timely support, or to process prolonged pain or potentially suppressed grief:

Our website AtaLoss.org provides signposting to over 2,000 bereavement resources and organisations offering support.

The Bereavement Journey® programme is a unique form of structured volunteer led bereavement support.  Offered by churches for their communities it provides 7 sessions of films and facilitated discussion for adults to process the impact of a death, in a safe space with others.

We are delighted to announce that Yvonne Tulloch, our Founder and Chief Executive has been given the prestigious CEO Monthly Most Influential CEO 2026 Award in recognition of her leadership in Bereavement Support.

This accolade celebrates outstanding and visionary leadership, influence and impact in bereavement support and is awarded annually to CEOs who inspire, transform and drive meaningful change across organisations and communities. For AtaLoss, this recognition reflects Yvonne’s determination to change society’s long-standing “death denial” and to ensure that everyone can access timely, understanding bereavement support when someone dies.

Award judges highlighted Yvonne’s exceptional influence as a leader who is innovatively championing self-help, holistic support and a return to community-based bereavement support. This has shaped AtaLoss’ growth and expanding national influence. Today, our charity is recognised as the UK’s leading bereavement signposting organisation, playing a vital role within the wider bereavement support landscape by improving access and visibility to services and information, and with more than 570 locations delivering The Bereavement Journey® peer support programme: churches, prisons, workplaces, care homes and other settings.

Yvonne’s leadership is rooted in deep personal experience and a commitment to reshape how society responds to bereavement, breaking the taboo and making timely and all-round help easy to find. Since its conception AtaLoss has been offering an innovative model of raised awareness, signposting and community help, addressing the first three tiers of the adult bereavement care pyramid, to help the 85-90% of bereaved people who will grieve healthily without therapist support. Our impact report shows impressive results.

The award recognises not only Yvonne’s leadership, but the shared mission at the heart of AtaLoss: to make effective bereavement support accessible for all.

Reflecting on the award, Yvonne said:

“This award is a wonderful surprise, and great honour. It is not just personal but reflects the hard work and dedication of the AtaLoss team as a whole, and the pioneering nature of our work. Ensuring information and support is on hand for bereaved people through the media, signposting and increased community support, is changing the culture around bereavement, enabling grief to be processed, challenges to be addressed before problems escalate, and counsellors to be used effectively for complex needs. Also, we are not only bringing compassionate help to grieving people, we are addressing a public health issue at very low cost. Recognition like this encourages us to go further, reach more communities and continue to bring understanding and hope.”

Read the article by CEO Monthly, featured in their February 2026 issue here

_______________________________________________________________________________

AtaLoss is a UK wide charity helping bereaved people find support and wellbeing by raising awareness about the impact of bereavement; directing to help through the signposting website ataloss.org; and training and equipping community support, including through The Bereavement Journey® programme.

Yvonne Tulloch, CEO and Founder at AtaLoss or Roger Greene, Deputy CEO and former NHS Trust CEO are available by prior arrangement.

Media interviews can be arranged via WhatsApp message to Adam May on 07736 949 869 or press@ataloss.org

A special parliamentary event today, hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Grief Support and the Impact of Death on Society, has underlined a national lack of access to bereavement support and called for central signposting via AtaLoss.org.

The event, which was sponsored by Lord Leslie Griffiths of Burry Port, coincided with the  UK Commission on Bereavement’s review and was within National Grief Awareness Week.

The UK Bereavement Commission’s landmark 2022 report identified widespread gaps in bereavement support and access to the services that exist. These concerns remain acute today.

Yvonne Tulloch, CEO of the signposting and community bereavement support charity AtaLoss, which is Secretariat to the  APPG, said:

“Research shows that most bereaved people do not find the support they need - often because they don’t know where to turn, or because the services they’re referred to are oversubscribed, unsuitable, or the information is out of date. For ten years we have worked to provide a central signposting website to address these issues, and through the APPG we are now proposing a gold-standard national service.

“Signposting must be more than repeatedly pointing people to a few well-known organisations. It needs to be a dedicated, up-to-date online service offering helplines, comprehensive guidance on the many ways grief can affect people, and access to both local and specialist services and resources that offer holistic help and choice.”

Andy Langford of Cruse, Steering Group member of the APPG and partnering with AtaLoss for the event, added:

"At Cruse, we help thousands of people with their grief every year.  However, we know that there are so many more who can’t get access to the support they need.  Funding is so limited, and this limits our capacity to help.  Access to clear information, practical guidance, peer and community-based support is vital.  Directing people to options that will help them in their grief ensures people can access help as soon as possible and enable those who need more intensive support and counselling to receive support sooner."

APPG Chair Maureen Burke MP said:

"Grief and loss affect all parts of society, and good bereavement support must be a priority across Parliament. Everyone is bereaved at some point, and without support there can be long-term consequences. Universal referral to support at the time of a terminal diagnosis, the point of death, and at key trigger points throughout life would be a preventative measure that saves public money in the long term and provides vital assistance when it’s most needed."

Dame Sarah Mullally, Chair of the UK Commission on Bereavement, said:

“The Commission’s report was clear; far too many people cannot access bereavement support.
One more gift from the tree – recycle to raise funds

Register your Christmas Tree for collection and help us raise vital funds for bereavement support.

We know that Christmas can be a particularly difficult time for bereaved people.

AtaLoss is running another ‘Christmas Treecycling’ project this year, to help us raise vital funds towards our mission to support more bereaved people through signposting and community support and raise even more awareness in 2026.

Thanks to our charity partner JustHelping (national organisers of the Christmas tree appeal), we are able to offer people across the stretch of the Sussex Coast between Chichester and Brighton – and surrounding areas – a collection of their real Christmas trees. These collections take place in early January and save you the hassle after Christmas of disposing your tree.

The process is simple, simply visit https://www.just-helping.org.uk/register-tree and enter your postcode.

If your area is covered by our collection, you can register your tree/s (up to 3) – you’ll be prompted to leave a donation of your choice to AtaLoss for this service.

Between Monday 12th and Wednesday 14th January, our fantastic team of volunteer helpers will work their way along our routes, collecting trees and dropping them off at our dedicated wood-chipping site.

If you, or someone you know may be interested in joining our team to help us collect or recycle the trees in January, please drop us an email at atalosstrees@gmail.com.

Why not save yourself a job over the New Year? When you register your tree you are not only helping the environment, but supporting a brilliant cause – one which is able to help so many over the Christmas and New Year period.

Registrations close on Wednesday, 7th January at midnight.

Register your tree here:

https://www.just-helping.org.uk/register-tree

We’re delighted that AtaLoss and The Bereavement Journey® featured in this Sunday’s BBC Songs of Praise episode for All Souls’ Day, a time in the church calendar dedicated to remembering those who have died and offering comfort to those bereaved.

Presented by the Revd Canon Kate Bottley, the programme explores how faith communities are supporting people through bereavement, with Kate visiting Riverside Church in Moseley, Birmingham, AtaLoss’ first official bereavement-friendly church, which has embraced our Bereavement Friendly Church charter, including our The Bereavement Journey® community support programme.

During the episode, Kate spoke with Yvonne Tulloch, founder and CEO of AtaLoss, who shares her own personal experience of bereavement and how it inspired her to establish the charity to provide national bereavement awareness, UK wide signposting, and community support - and how we are equipping hundreds of churches across the UK to run The Bereavement Journey® and become bereavement friendly.

The programme also featured a fourth-generation funeral director, who reflected on the role of faith in supporting those facing loss and who called for bereavement education to become part of the national school curriculum. A businesswoman also shared how her faith was rekindled following the sudden death of her husband, highlighting the importance of compassionate support in rebuilding life after loss.

Reflecting on the broadcast, Yvonne Tulloch said:

“It’s wonderful to see churches across the country stepping up to support those who are bereaved — of all faiths and none — with new understanding and in practical ways. Through initiatives like The Bereavement Journey, and by adopting our Charter, churches are becoming safe spaces where people can find understanding and hope at a time when they need it most. I’m delighted that Songs of Praise have chosen to highlight the need for bereavement support and to showcase our much appreciated and rapidly expanding work.”

You can stream the episode on BBC iPlayer (search Songs of Praise – All Souls’ Day).

Go to our Bereavement Friendly Communities page if you’re interested in finding out about becoming a bereavement friendly church or community.

For information about The Bereavement Journey® see here.

Revd Lisa Coupland, the Church of England priest who first came to public attention on series three of BBC’s The Traitors, has become our latest celebrity ambassador.

Since her appearance on the hit television show, Lisa has become a familiar voice and face on daytime TV, BBC Sunday morning radio, and in national magazines. She brings significant national leadership experience in bereavement.

AtaLoss, the UK’s national bereavement charity providing bereavement awareness, signposting and community support, is delighted to announce that the Bishop of London, the Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally, has become a Patron of the charity.

AtaLoss’ vision is for a society that recognises the various ways in which bereavement can impact, and where timely and effective support is available to all, enabling healthier grieving and fostering improved wellbeing across communities. As Bishop Sarah wrote in her introduction to the 2022 UK Commission on Bereavement report Bereavement is Everyone’s Business (in which AtaLoss is referenced), by making grief a “taboo” – something to be feared and locked away - we make it all the harder to understand our loss and support each other through it. AtaLoss is determined to tackle this by breaking down barriers around grief, raising awareness of bereavement issues, and ensuring that people across the UK can find the right help to overcome their challenges.

Bishop Sarah brings significant national leadership experience in bereavement, health and social care. Between 1999 to 2004, she was Chief Nursing Officer for England and the National Health Service's director of patient experience for England. She currently serves as Chair of the UK Commission on Bereavement, which highlighted the urgent need for accessible, non-clinical support for the millions affected by loss each year. In addition, as the Church of England’s Lead Bishop for Health and Social Care in the House of Lords, she has been a consistent advocate for the wellbeing of people and communities facing profound challenges.

Speaking of her new role as Patron, The Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally said:

“Having long admired the work of AtaLoss, I am thrilled to be joining as its Patron. Its vision of a society in which grieving people are fully supported and given the tools they need to deal with a death is one which we can all get behind, and one which I know they are working tirelessly to bring about. I know from personal experience, not just as a priest but as a nurse, that too often people feel they are alone in their grief.

The work of charities like AtaLoss is so vital to ensure bereaved people know they are not alone, that there are resources out there for those that need it. It is an honour to join Yvonne and the team in furthering this mission.”

Welcoming the appointment, Yvonne Tulloch, Founder and Chief Executive of AtaLoss, added:

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Bishop Sarah as Patron. Her leadership as Chair of the UK Commission on Bereavement and as the Church of England’s Lead Bishop for Health and Social Care in the House of Lords gives her unique authority and insight into the challenges bereaved people face.

She has been a strong advocate for ensuring bereavement is recognised as a pressing public health issue, and we are honoured that she has chosen to support AtaLoss in our mission to ensure that no one in the UK faces bereavement without the help they need.”

AtaLoss is launching its new Case for Support: Transforming Bereavement Support, Transforming Lives (Autumn 2025) tonight at Lambeth Palace. The event marks the beginning of a national appeal to ensure that everyone in the UK can find timely, compassionate help when facing loss.

Each year, more than six million people experience the death of someone close. Yet too many still struggle to find the support they need. The impact of grief reaches deeply into people’s health, relationships, workplaces and communities.

AtaLoss is working to change that. Through raising awareness of the impact of bereavement, our national signposting platform AtaLoss.org and our structured community programme The Bereavement Journey®, we help people find understanding, connection and hope after loss.

The Case for Support outlines how, with collective effort, we can build on this progress by:

expanding AtaLoss.org, the UK’s national hub for bereavement information and signposting

extending The Bereavement Journey® into more settings — including care homes, prisons, the Armed Forces and NHS locations

training more volunteers and organisations to provide holistic, local support

continuing to inform national policy and good practice through the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Grief Support and the Impact of Death on Society

Independent evaluation has confirmed the impact of this work:

95% of The Bereavement Journey® participants say it helped them process their loss

93% feel better able to cope

73% report improved mental health

AtaLoss has also demonstrated strong value for money — with an estimated £250 in wellbeing value for every £1 invested in The Bereavement Journey®.

Yvonne Tulloch, Founder and CEO of AtaLoss, said:

“Grief affects everyone at some point in life, yet access to support remains patchy and often too late. Our Case for Support sets out how, together, we can make that kind of help available to everyone who needs it.”

The Case for Support also highlights AtaLoss’s growing national influence through its advocacy and awareness work — from leading conversations in the media to informing government policy and supporting professionals across sectors.

A £200,000 match-fund pledge is in place until March 2026, meaning gifts received during this period will have double the impact.

“The need is vast.
As the Liberal Democrat Conference meets in Bournemouth this week, Sir Ed Davey, the Party Leader has given his backing to The Bereavement Journey®, a national programme supporting adults dealing with recent and historic grief. The Leader has come out calling the programme “a lifeline for those facing the pain of losing a loved one.”

In a time where there are cuts in healthcare, Sir Ed acknowledged the financial benefit this programme is making.

Sir Ed’s comment follows a Danish study released earlier this summer which reported that prolonged grief can almost double the risk of death within ten years*.

A report from bereavement charity, AtaLoss, shows that timely, comprehensive, grief support can improve mental health and resilience and reduce reliance on NHS, welfare and crisis services — all of which carry a significant cost to the nation.

Delivered by churches in over 470 communities across the UK, The Bereavement Journey® is a pioneering, volunteer-led, grief support programme, re-launched in 2023 to help adults process the range of ways a bereavement can impact, whether recent or long ago, for their future wellbeing. The programme uniquely offers an option of spiritual support and accompanying signposting to wider services and resources to complete the all-round help.

A recent Independent Impact Evaluation shows:

● 96% of participants reported understanding how their bereavement was affecting them

● 95% said the course helped them to process their loss.

● 86% reported reduced loneliness

● 73% reported improvements in mental health

● 79% attended the optional spiritual session with 95% finding it helpful

● Over 93% said they felt better able to cope with their situation at the end of the course.

Participants reported renewed hope, improved resilience, and increased ability to re-engage with daily life and support others – all strongly linked to better public health outcomes.

The report proves that The Bereavement Journey® with accompanying signposting transforms lives. At the end of the 2-year evaluation period AtaLoss had invested £473K over 3 years to upgrade, relaunch, promote and support the packaged programme delivery. From that investment came at least £39.4 million in societal wellbeing gains - from 2,995 (one-third of total) participants. When all participants are considered, this equates to £118.2 million in gains – a return of almost £250 for every £1 invested.

With waiting times for NHS bereavement counselling stretching to 18–24 months in some areas, healthcare professionals are increasingly referring patients to the programme.

Welcoming this report, The Rt Hon Sir Ed Davey MP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, said:

“Losing a loved one is incredibly tough, and the grief can feel unbearable. Strong community support can be a lifeline. This was highlighted by the UK Bereavement Commission.

I was encouraged to see the findings of the impact of The Bereavement Journey® and how this has been demonstrated to be true. This course and the saving it makes to the public purse brings big benefits not just for the people they help, but for our wider society too.

It’s time we recognise that and properly support people as they deal with loss.”

Yvonne Tulloch, Founder and CEO of AtaLoss added:

“I welcome the backing of Sir Ed to this report.

As he acknowledges, grief isn’t just personal—it’s a public health and economic issue.

The Bereavement Journey® programme is providing timely support and preventing potential damaging outcomes. Bereavement affects people practically, physically, psychologically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Along with our signposting it is regaining the informal, holistic community support that society once offered. Almost all of us have grown up with death as taboo, leading to grief illiteracy and neglect of bereavement support. In forgone years the various ways that death can impact were known and supported across a community, enabling bereaved people to process all aspects and re-build their future.Today, society hardly allows time off work to attend a funeral, let alone support in the holistic way bereavement requires. If a person is struggling after a death, counselling is usually the only help that is suggested.

We have yet to fully discover the lifelong cost to individuals and in turn, the public purse from decades of unprocessed loss.”

The analysis showed significant research evidence both in the UK and internationally that unsupported and unprocessed grief from bereavement have wide social implications for the health and welfare of both individuals and wider communities. With over 7 million people significantly bereaved in the UK in 2024 alone, the report concludes that The Bereavement Journey® could yield substantial societal and economic benefits, including reduced pressure on NHS services, and savings for employers. It cited physical and mental ill-health, reduced income, loneliness, substance abuse, homelessness, suicide contagion and crime as some of the potential consequences and concluded

‘The significant majority (85-90%) of bereaved people who do not require or will benefit from a clinical intervention may be helpfully supported by participating in The Bereavement Journey® and/or being signposted to suitable information and support services.’

In the light of this research, AtaLoss is calling for The Bereavement Journey® and its national signposting service to be integrated into NHS and public health pathways, as a key element of the Government’s new Health and Social Care Mission delivered in partnership with churches and others to ensure nationwide access.

*Nielsen, M.
Read the Impact Evalutation Report of The Bereavement Journey®.

An independent evaluation has revealed that AtaLoss’ UK-wide bereavement support programme, delivered by churches for their communities, has generated wellbeing benefits valued at more than £33.5 million over two years – with significant potential for national public health adoption.

The study, commissioned by national charity AtaLoss and conducted by Youthrive Research Consultancy, examined the impact of The Bereavement Journey®, a pioneering, volunteer-led, grief support programme, re-launched in 2023 to help adults process the range of ways a bereavement can impact, whether recent or long ago, for their future wellbeing. The programme uniquely offers an option of spiritual support and accompanying signposting to complete the all-round help.

Proven improvements in wellbeing

The study examined feedback from the first 377 courses across the UK from April 2023 to March 2025. Key outcomes include:

96% of participants reported understanding how their bereavement was affecting them

95% said the course helped them to process their loss.

86% reported reduced loneliness

73% reported improvements in mental health

79% attended the optional spiritual session with 95% finding it helpful

And over 93% said they felt better able to cope with their situation at the end of the course.

Participants reported renewed hope, improved resilience, and increased ability to re-engage with daily life and support others – all strongly linked to better public health outcomes.

Strong case for public investment

Using HM Treasury’s Green Book wellbeing valuation, the report estimates the first two years of The Bereavement Journey® courses contributed to at least 2,575 WELLBYs (Wellbeing-Adjusted Life Years), equating to £33.5 million in social value – potentially £39.4 million with inflation.

With over 7 million people significantly bereaved in the UK in 2024 alone, the report concludes that The Bereavement Journey® could yield substantial societal and economic benefits, including reduced pressure on NHS mental health services, and savings for employers.

As author, Dr Becky Ward, Youthrive Research Consultancy concludes:

The Bereavement Journey® is not simply a compassionate and effective course for people to cope with their grief, it is also a promising model of social and economic investment for our nation.

Closing the gap in bereavement provision

Many communities have limited local bereavement services, with some people facing waits of 18–24 months for counselling. Healthcare professionals, including GPs and social prescribers, are increasingly referring patients to The Bereavement Journey® as an accessible, timely alternative.

Gold standard signposting

The evaluation also examined AtaLoss.org, the charity’s national signposting website, which is offered alongside the programme to provide access to further tailored services and resources. Awareness within local courses was lower than expected but the website was highly valued by those who used it, prompting a call for wider adoption of the charity’s “gold standard” signposting in all bereavement pathways.

AtaLoss CEO and founder Yvonne Tulloch concludes:

“The Bereavement Journey® with its accompanying signposting is regaining the informal, holistic community support that society once offered. Almost all of us have grown up with death as taboo, leading to grief illiteracy and neglect of bereavement support. It cited physical and mental ill-health, reduced income, loneliness, substance abuse, homelessness, suicide contagion and crime as some of the potential consequences and concluded:

“The significant majority (85-90%) of bereaved people who do not require or benefit from a clinical intervention may be helpfully supported by participating in The Bereavement Journey® and/or being signposting to suitable information and support services.”

AtaLoss is calling for The Bereavement Journey® and its signposting model to be integrated into the NHS and public health bereavement pathways, as a key element of the Government’s new Health and Social Care Mission delivered in partnership with churches and others to ensure nationwide access.

Grief education is now being introduced into the school curriculum in England to help children to understand how to cope with grief — a landmark step that we at AtaLoss fully support.

Grief affects every one of us. Yet for too long, conversations about loss have been avoided in schools due to fear, discomfort, or lack of guidance. That’s now beginning to change.

As part of the revised Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum, children - one of whom in each classroom on average has been bereaved - will begin learning about bereavement in an age-appropriate way—helping to normalise grief, support their emotional wellbeing, and build compassion from a young age.

As Secretariat to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Grief Support and the Impact of Death on Society (APPG), AtaLoss welcomes this much-needed change.

“This curriculum update reflects a much-needed cultural shift—away from the widespread denial of death in our society. By making grief something we can talk about openly, we are helping to equip future generations with the empathy, resilience, and understanding they need to cope with bereavement as well as support many children currently bereaved.

The impact won’t just be emotional—it will be economic too. Alongside social pressures unsupported bereavement is contributing to the rising mental ill-health issue in young people and suicide contagion - and misdiagnosis to increased demands. The cost of unrecognised and unsupported grief to the UK economy is staggering, with bereavement-related job loss and reduced productivity alone estimated at £22.6 billion annually. Supporting the many other negative outcomes such as physical ill-health, debt, homelessness, addiction, relationship breakdown and crime are costing the country multiple billions more.

As Secretariat of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Grief Support and the Impact of Death on Society, we at AtaLoss—alongside fellow members—will continue to push for teachers to receive the training, resources and signposting to information and specialist services they need to equip them to deliver this vital part of the curriculum confidently.”

— Yvonne Tulloch, CEO, AtaLoss

Wondering howe to cope with grief?
The Government has supported a proposed amendment to the Employment Bill that would give parents the legal right to take at least one week of bereavement leave following a miscarriage at any stage of pregnancy.

Currently, statutory bereavement leave in the UK only applies after 24 weeks’ gestation or after the death of a child under the age of 18. If passed, this amendment would mark a significant change—recognising the emotional impact of early pregnancy loss and offering protected time off to both parents, regardless of the stage of pregnancy.

The change was brought forward by Labour MP Sarah Owen, following recommendations from the Women and Equalities Committee, and received Government backing in the House of Lords. Business Minister Justin Madders confirmed that the Government “fully accepts the principle” behind the amendment. The detailed terms of the entitlement, including any statutory pay, will be shaped through a public consultation. The legislation is expected to come into effect in 2027, pending Royal Assent of the full Bill.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast News today, AtaLoss Deputy CEO Roger Greene said:

“We really welcome this increasing recognition by Government that grief from bereavement is genuinely heartbreaking, and we would particularly like to see signposting into bereavement support — the appropriate support — that can be given to people in these circumstances.”

You can watch Roger’s full appearance on BBC iPlayer.

What the proposed change means:

Legal recognition: Parents experiencing a miscarriage at any point in pregnancy would no longer have to rely on sick leave or the discretion of their employer.

Inclusion: Both the birth parent and their partner would be eligible for leave, mirroring provisions for stillbirth or child loss.

Consultation underway: A public consultation will determine whether statutory pay is included and how the entitlement will be applied.

Implementation expected by 2027: The change forms part of the wider Employment Bill currently under review.

AtaLoss calls for action beyond legislation

AtaLoss welcomes this important step forward but urges action to ensure that time off from work is matched by timely and accessible emotional support.
As the Law Commission considers proposals to legalise new funeral methods in the UK, AtaLoss is calling for a balanced approach that prioritises the emotional needs of grieving families.

The consultation paper, published earlier this week, outlines the potential for alternatives such as alkaline hydrolysis (often called water cremation or resomation) and natural organic reduction (human composting). These options, already in use in countries like the United States, Canada, and South Africa, are being presented as more environmentally sustainable choices compared to traditional cremation and burial.

Innovation is welcome—especially if it reduces funeral costs and environmental impact— but such decisions must never overlook the crucial role funerals play in the grief journey.

Our CEO, Yvonne Tulloch says: “AtaLoss welcomes any new initiative that helps people think about and plan for death, especially if it reduces the cost of funerals, but the wishes of those who will be left behind must always be taken into account. Funerals are not just about the disposal of a body, but the opportunity for family and friends to say their goodbye in a way that is helpful and meaningful for them.”

We caution against overly prescriptive instructions from the deceased as these can unintentionally disrupt the grieving process: “Anything that is prescriptive by the deceased can be counterproductive, complicating rather than enabling the grief journey, with potential for unresolved grief. The means of disposal of the body, however that might be, must feel comfortable for the family.”

We already have concerns about the growing popularity of direct cremations—no-service, unattended funeral—which, though affordable, can have consequences due to families not being involved.”

These new options may offer more sustainable or cost-effective ways to manage the body, but we urge policymakers, funeral directors, and individuals to remember that grief care cannot be reduced to logistics.

However green or affordable the method, it is the emotional and communal aspects of funerals that support healthy grieving. Any future planning by individuals should prioritise choice for those left behind.”

As the Law Commission’s consultation continues, AtaLoss encourages individuals to have open, honest conversations with their families about end-of-life wishes, and to leave options open for when the time comes.”

To learn more about the importance of conversations before death read our article The Final Farewell: The Power of Discussing Death

For more information, support, and resources around bereavement and planning meaningful funerals, browse the support pages of this website.

We’re proud to have kicked off a series of 3 webinars on the subject of working with grief, loss and death with the Cheshire and Merseyside Workforce Hub as part of our bereavement awareness training portfolio.

The sessions are designed to enhance awareness and self-awareness among both clinical and non-clinical Talking Therapies staff in managing and supporting grief, loss, and death effectively, both with clients and colleagues.

Key topics covered include Grief Literacy, differentiating between grief, mourning, and bereavement, the seven dimensions of bereavement, and developing the skills to engage with people who are bereaved.

The series is structured to include reflective exercises for participants to engage in deep reflection on their own experiences of loss and grief, promoting emotional insight, personal growth, and critical self-reflection.

The first session was attended by 130 Taking Therapies staff from 8 NHS organisations and received a rating of 4.68/5 from the 60 participants who completed the evaluation.

Some evaluation comments received include:

A really helpful exploration of attitudes towards loss and grief. It was good to reflect on how we distinguish between grief and depression as practitioners. Thank you so much!

This session was extremely insightful and many thanks to Roger for delivering such a valuable session. It was good to reflect on grief as it is something we usually do not do often.
